Handel s popular opera, Giulio Cesare, is named after the great Roman emperor, but its most memorable character is Cleopatra. In this production by Laurent Pelly from Paris splendid Palais Garnier, the role of the Egyptian queen is assumed for the first time by Natalie Dessay, described by the Telegraph as a supreme vocal enchantress.

Natalie Dessay signed her first exclusive contract with EMI Classics in 1994 and, in addition to the recordings already mentioned, her catalogue includes discs of Mozart (a collection of arias and his Mass in C minor), songs and arias by Strauss, works by Monteverdi Bach and Handel (including a disc of arias from Giulio Cesare), all conducted.
In 2013, Erato released Entre Elle et Lui, which saw Dessay accompanied by Michael Legrand on his own songs. That same year, after appearing at the Met in Handel's Giulio Cesare and in Toulouse as Massenet's Manon, Dessay, still in her late forties, retired from the opera stage.

Giulius Cesare in Egitto is one of Handel's greatest operatic masterpieces, alongside the likes of Serse, Tamerlano, Rinaldo, Alcina, Rhodelinda,. Giulius Cesare has posed no small casting problems over the past decades of its revival. Cesare is composed for alto castrato (Senesino) and so is Tolomeo.

The fact that the role of Handel's Cleopatra includes enough music to fill out a CD, and that, combined with the music's demands for immense virtuosity and versatility, makes it a daunting challenge and Natalie Dessay is impressive in her account of these excerpts. Dessay's singing is not entirely consistent throughout the album, recorded in 2010, whether because some arias are simply better.
